The organisation was established in 1991 in acknowledgement of the major part that leisure plays in people’s lives.  People with a disability have the right to the same opportunities as other members of society to participate in sport and recreation activities.

 

Total Recreation works with over 200 students through their schools sports program in  Darwin, Palmerston and the rural areas to increase the opportunities for their involvement in structured sport.  In addition to this the organisation has  over 150 adult  members active in numerous programs including Special Olympics,, Sailability and  ten pin bowling at   local  and  national levels.  This variety of sport and recreational activities assists them to become active and valued members of their community.


Support is offered on both group and individual programs.
  • Individual program aims to increase the level of the participant's independence within community based recreation activity.
  • Group program aims to develop skills specific to the individual's selected recreational activity.


Create Opportunities for people to increase knowledge, gain new skills and develop their own social networks.


Provide Support to people with disability who have expressed a desire to access recreational activities.

Network, collect information and share ideas and options with individuals and organisations.

Lobby other relative organisations. services and the community regarding the rights of all persons with disability to have access to recreational opportunities.

  • Everyone has the right to be recognised primarily as a person, regardless of their disability.
  • The service accepts the "Disability Standards Act (1986), NT Disability Standards Act (1993) and the Disability Services Standards for Services funded under Commonwealth Disability Services Act (1986)" as a frameof reference in its provision of the services to the public who choose to avail themselves of this service.
  • All people with motivation, individually tailored training and support can develop skills to enhance their choice of lifestyle.
  • Participating through individual choice social life provides challenges and opportunities to enhance the quality of a person's lifestyle.
  • The development of social and recreational participation in people's lives encouraging decision making where the availability of training and support when such changes are implemented.
  • Total Recreation has a principally non-elite focus,concentrating on the provision of participation opportunities.
  • Initiatives and decisions are to focus on providing sporting and recreational opportunities of permanent value in conjunction with community groups.
